How the credit works
Alabama is a reciprocal state. Per the Department of Revenue, you get credit for sales tax legally collected by another state. The credit is applied first to Alabama state tax, and any remainder against county and municipal taxes.
Mississippi collected $915.43 (2.875% × $31,416). Alabama's state use tax on the same purchase is $628.32 (2%). The MS credit fully covers the AL state portion. The state-tax balance is paid in full the moment you walk into the tag office.
County and city taxes are not reciprocal. Whatever Madison County and Huntsville charge for a vehicle bought out-of-state, you owe in full — there is no rollover from the excess MS credit.
Registration checklist
Bring to the Madison County License Department within 20 days:
- Original title or MSO from Pine Belt Honda. If the loan creates a lien, a copy is acceptable; the lender will hold the original.
- Title application — the dealer fills this out at signing. Verify it's complete before leaving Mississippi.
- Bill of sale with itemized sales tax — make sure Mississippi state tax is broken out as a line item, not bundled. Without this you risk being double-billed.
- Proof of Alabama insurance covering this VIN. Call your agent before the tag office trip.
- Driver's licenses for every name on the title.
- Proof of residency (recent utility bill, lease, etc.) if your AL license doesn't list your current Madison County address.
- The vehicle itself for a VIN and odometer inspection.
- Funds for fees: $18 title fee, ~$23–24 tag issuance, plus any local-tax difference and ad-valorem tax.
What it will cost at the tag office
| Title fee | $18.00 |
| Tag issuance | ~$23–24.00 |
| Annual ad-valorem tax | varies by market value |
| Madison County + Huntsville local tax | call to confirm |
Expect a few hundred dollars total, dominated by the local-tax difference if the combined county/city rate is higher than the 2.875% MS rate.
If the dealer offers to remit Alabama tax
Some Mississippi dealers will collect Alabama use tax on your behalf and remit it directly to Madison County. Ask Pine Belt Honda whether they're set up for this. If yes, walk out paying the AL combined rate up-front and you avoid the second trip to the tag office. If no, plan on paying any local-tax difference yourself at registration.
