Next steps

Talking points, an action checklist, and what to monitor after delivery.

Negotiation talking points

  1. Document fee. The $425 doc fee is dealer profit, not a government charge. Many dealers will trim it $100–200 if you ask. Worst case, they say no.
  2. GAP waiver. The $950 SafeGap is the easiest line item to remove — get GAP through your insurer for less than a quarter the price. Even if you keep it, ask for it at cost or skip it entirely.
  3. APR. Pre-approval from your bank or credit union is the strongest move you have. If they beat 5.29%, the dealer will usually match within 0.25% to keep the financing.
  4. Pricing leverage. CarGurus flagged this as a Fair Deal listing at $444 below market, after a $346 drop in two weeks. After 14 days on the lot, there's some softness in the price.
  5. Arbitration clause. Ask to strike or modify it. You're giving up your right to sue in court and to join a class action. Some dealers will agree, especially on used inventory.
  6. Take it home overnight. Don't sign at the dealer. Take every document home, run the math yourself, and come back the next day with anything you want changed.

  • Call insurance agent to bind a policy effective the purchase date
  • Call Madison County License Dept to confirm local-tax math

At signing

  • Verify every blank on the contract is filled in
  • Confirm itemized Mississippi tax on the bill of sale
  • Get a written tax receipt from the dealer
  • Get the lienholder name and lien-mailing address in writing
  • Decline or accept GAP, extended warranty consciously, in writing

Within 20 days

  • Visit Madison County tag office with full registration packet
  • Pay any local-tax difference, title & tag fees
  • Update insurance card with the AL plate number once issued

First 30 days

  • Cancel SafeGap if you've chosen insurer GAP — full refund window
  • Confirm lender has filed the title properly
  • Verify no trade-in payoff issues (n/a here unless one is added)

Long-game money moves

Also: revisit the rate at 12 months. If credit unions are quoting under 5%, a refinance can be worthwhile even on a mid-life auto loan. The remaining balance is small enough that title-transfer fees stay modest.
